From closely interacting with a Singapore-based environmental consultant, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra attempted to quantify the carbon emission reduction from b-panel® adoption in each of the projects that we have completed to date.
b-foam® EPS insulation on the entire wall surface of b-panel® effectively blocks outside heat from penetrating into the building. This would significantly reduce the operating load of air conditioning (A/C). A/C is the largest source of energy consumption in a typical house in Indonesia, at almost 40% from the total consumption. For example, the operation cost of a typical hotel is dominated by A/C.
b-panel® application for exterior wall will reduce the heat transfer from ambient air as well as sun intensity. In theory, b-panel® wall can reduce heat transfer by more than 90%. However, due to thermal leaks from areas other than the walls, such as air gaps on doors and window openings, as well as through glass and window frames, the actual heat transfer reduction is lower. Nevertheless, it is estimated that around 40%, of approximately 100Watt per m2 floor space of heat transfer will be reduced from the use of b-panel®. (For detailed analysis, please see http://www.b-panel.com/penghematan-biaya-air-conditioner)
Using several reasonable assumptions, such as a utilization rate of 14 hours per day, and 300 days per year, 3700 MWh per annum of electricity power savings is obtained. For Jawa-Bali grid, due to the domination of fossil fuel as the predominant electrical generation mode, especially the high-carbon content coal, the emission factor of Java-Bali grid is high, at 0.728. Thus, it is very important for all of us to be mindful about our electricity consumption. Although one can claim that he or she has the means to afford a huge electricity bill, the price to pay by our grandchildren living in a damaged environment will be too high to bear.
From the analysis results, the use of b-panel® at the projects completed to date is already reducing 2700 tons of carbon emission each year. This carbon reduction benefit is significant and permanent, where as long as the dwelling being occupied or office being rented. As discussed in a previous article http://www.b-panel.com/2011-09-thermal-test-result-for-b-panel-wall-and-roof-deck, what is happening today is an accelerated global warming, where increased A/C consumption due to the heat in turn causes more CO2 from power generator to be released into the atmosphere, and speed up the warming, and so on. It is PT Beton Elemenindo Putra’s goal to help slow down, or even reverse this vicious cycle.
Beside the environmentally-beneficial application of b-panel®, b-panel® production process also has carbon reduction in mind. By using 100% biomass (palm kernel shell) for our boiler, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra pursues the lowest possible carbon footprint in producing b-panel®.
We hope from the increased b-panel® project portfolio (60 locations to date and counting), our contribution in lowering carbon emission will be significant. With the amount of carbon being released to the atmosphere – For example, a typical coal-fired electrical generator emits more than a million tons of CO2 per year – it is extremely important for those who already realize the foolishness of environmental destruction by humans, to act as soon as possible.
For its carbon-footprint reducing properties, mindful production process, and methodical installation
philosophy, b-panel® was selected as the Merit Winner for the 2012 Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (SEAA), for the Regional (ASEAN) category.
