June 2012 | Broader environmental consideration in b-panel production process

b-panel® is a comprehensively environmentally-conscious product. From its contribution to significant and permanent A/C electricity consumption reduction due to the superior R-value of its b-foam® EPS insulation, to its installation method – based on “zero-waste” philosophy where project waste is minimized or even eliminated, due to the fact that b-panel® is shipped pre-cut and pre-shaped according to specific projects requirements, all the way to its holistically responsible production process, such as recycling 100% of panel EPS production waste to make the next batch of panels, and 100% biomass fired boiler, a novelty in the place where burning cheap but environmentally damaging coal is the norm.

In our quest to always improve its standing as an environmentally responsible business, PT Beton Elemenindo Putra conducts an innovative recycling program for its waste regular (RG) EPS (non-fire retardant foam for traditional applications, such as packaging and decoration), by blending RG EPS, after the debris have been crushed by a state-of the art recycling unit based on Japanese technology, into the fire-retardant (FR) EPS foam mix, which is the staple raw material for b-panel®. The content level of recycled RG EPS is strictly measured, to ensure that the Fire-retardant property of the foam meets the minimum standard. PT. Beton’s R&D team has systematically analyzed the fire-retardant behavior of various FR-RG EPS mix, and has determined a certain mix percentage that is safe for this application. Customer’s safety of b-panel® is always the outmost importance for PT Beton Elemenindo Putra. PT Beton Elemenindo Putra intends to use this foam design mix in the long run, mostly to help reduce the negative environmental impact associated with waste EPS foam (more commonly known as Styrofoam) which until today is still a pervasive environmental problem, due to the fact that it takes hundreds of years for nature to break it down, resulting in EPS debris floating on our waterways, river, choke wildlife, and contribute to flooding as they clog waterways.

Beside recycling our own RG EPS waste, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra has for a while offers recycled-blend EPS (as well as recycling 100% of FR EPS for our panels that has been practiced for quite a while), PT Beton Elemenindo Putra also offers to collect EPS waste from all the shops and business around greater Bandung. The impact should be extremely positive – instead of ending up clogging waterways, EPS waste morphs info energy-saving material for people’s dwelling.

Beside the EPS recycling program, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra also organize environmentally-sound practice within our daily activities. Examples are our rainwater collecting roof, which saves us a significant amount of public utility water consumption, and staff waste recycling program, which sorts the waste into paper, plastic, and organic waste. Organic waste is mixed with palm shell waste from the boiler operation, to be buried on soil as they are geo-compatible, while plastic waste, such as drink bottle and plastic bags, are collected to be supplied to garbage collection business.

RG Foam blending into b-panel is PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra’s latest move to keep addressing the remaining environmental issues we face within our production process, and at this moment our R&D team continues to explore other innovative ideas to achieve our goal to be a truly significant part of the solution, and not part of the problem, to our increasingly fragile environments.

For its carbon-footprint reducing properties, mindful production process, and methodical installation
philosophy, b-panel® was selected as the Merit Winner for the 2012 Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (SEAA), for the Regional (ASEAN) category.
