5S method is an intensive workplace handling system originated from Japan, and is derived from five Japanese words – Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. It is used by management in order to maintain consistency, efficiency, and work discipline. The purpose of this method is to create a high work ethnic through overall working environment. On August 26th, 2011, the production department of PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra held 5S training for all their team members.

The 5S method consists of :

1. SEIRI (Sorting)

Eliminate all unnecessary parts and tools, keep only essential items and eliminate what is not required. Workers have to prioritize things per requirements, and keeping them in easy accessible places, so the workplace is become well organized and comfortable.

2. SEITON (Setting in order)

There should be a place for everything and everything should be in its place. Parts or tools should be arranged in a manner that promotes efficient work flow. Each tools, part, supply or piece of equipment should be kept close to where it will be used and easy accessible, so there are no waste of working time.

3. SEISO (Sweeping or Shining)

Cleaning the work place or equipment, and keep it tidy and well organized. A clean environment work place may reduce product defects. It is also support production process in order to increase product quality.

4. SEIKETSU (Standardizing)

An activity in order to keep all those activities previously mentioned (Seiri, Seiton and Seiso) to be in consistent and standardized. All production process should have its own SOP (Standard Operation Procedures), management also create 5S patrol team to continuously control production and supporting process.

5. SHITSUKE (Sustaining or Self Discipline)

Discipline training for each worker in implementing all those 5S steps. It includes setting targets together and support by close relationship between superiors and subordinates.

5S should be gradually implemented according to each step, if the first step is not done well, then the next step would not be able to be implemented optimally, and so on. After this training, it is expected that the workers will be more discipline, more responsible at their own duties, enable a more comfortable and cleaner work environment to ease the daily tasks.
