SBA ID recognizes companies operating in Indonesia, of all sizes and sectors, who have demonstrated sincere and effective effort in environmental responsibility – in the virtue of their products, and in the way they operates.

The Sustainable Business Award Indonesia ceremony was performed on November 28 2013, at the gala dinner of the Business for the Environment (B4E) Indonesia Summit 2013, hosted at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta by the Indonesian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Global Initiatives, Berita Satu, and the Indonesian Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD). Among the winners, both multinationals, such as Nestle, Monsanto, Danone, as well as national companies, such as Garuda Indonesia and BNI, are well represented. PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra’s emergence as the SME winner shows its resilient commitment to do what is right, despite the company’s much smaller footprint as compared to these corporate giants.

The award ceremony was officiated by Minister of State of National Development and Head of BAPPENAS, Mrs. Armida Alisjahbana and special Advisor to the President, Mr. Emil Salim. It was a refreshing sight to see Mr. Salim, the well-respected former Indonesian Minister and a staunch guard of the environment, being present at the event.

Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (SEAA) is Singapore’s premier award to recognize companies which have shown commitment to environmental and social responsibilities. It is organized by the Singapore Environmental Council. For 2012, the program introduced the new regional category, to include businesses in the ASEAN region.

PT Beton Elemenindo Putra’s emergence as a Merit Winner of this year’s SEAA’s regional (ASEAN) Category is definitely not a coincidence. The Bandung-based eco-building material startup‘s flagship product, b-panel^®, offers built-in thermal insulation to significantly reduce air-conditioning energy consumption, and therefore the carbon footprint, of any building that utilizes it. The company operates on a host of credible and comprehensive environmental measures, such as zero waste at the project site as well as its production line, as 100% of their panel cutout waste are meticulously reprocessed into the next batch of building panels. Another example is their biomass-fired boiler unit, a rarity in a place where cheap but polluting coal-fired boilers are the norm.

The company’s management has moved away from the “Small company in small town Indonesia” mentality, and aimed much higher – the kind of people it hires, the way they position their products, and naturally, their environmental aspiration. The company wishes to one day be a role model for sustainable construction businesses – showcasing that one can be genuinely green and achieve good financial results at the same time.

The award’s ceremony was held at The Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel on August 23rd. Present as the Guest of Honor was Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister of Environment and Water Resources. During the event, Mr. Don Kamarga, Managing Director of PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra, received the award certificate on behalf of the company.” A place at SEAA is an exceptionally credible approval for all the sustainability efforts our team has made to date.”, quips Mr. Kamarga. “This award should help us a great deal in strengthening b-panel^® brand and business prospect, and as importantly, to further boost our team’s morale, knowing that we are heading in the right direction on our quest to help solve the current environmental crisis. “

Attended the ceremony were b-panel staffs: Mr. Hendra Lim and Mr. Ariyanto Hidayat from the company’s technical team, and Mr. Andreas Vanden Bos, PT. Beton’s head of Manufacturing. Also attended were the company’s esteemed guests, Ms. Sachiko Ujiie and Madam Tan Siok Sun.
