  • The living room is adjacent to the foyer which is coded by the placement of the console. The wall covered by floral wallpapers becomes the focal point of this beautiful room.
  • The space is fairly cool on a sweltering afternoon due to walls, floors, and roofs using a expanded polystyrene (EPS)-lined concrete panel system.

The main principle of this house is to strive for the weather in the house not getting hot and to save on electricity cost. The building is designed with a lot of openings for good cross ventilation occurred. As a result, the air becomes cool and the room gets sufficient natural lighting.

The concept was supported by the use of material that is “friendly” with heat. Almost all building elements, ranging from walls, floors, roofs, stairs, pergola, to septic tanks, using EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) insulation which can reduce the heat from the outside of buildings up to 93%. Eventually, without using air conditioner, the room is fairly cool.

Energy-saving concept that brings into this building makes the house more environmentally friendly.

  • The bedroom which floor is made of wood is fitted with solid wooden furniture. Window frames are colored matching with the color of furnitures.
  • The accents of the room are the mattress and fresh floral pillow covers.

Why is the used of EPS?
This five-story house stands on 250m2 of land with a building area of 750m2. Architect, Dicky Aryoaditomo and homeowner, Lukman Masputra, agreed to use EPS insulated concrete by considering a number of advantages.

Polystyrene is a thermal insulation which reduces heat up to 93%, and be able to dampen the sound (sound proof). The material is lightweight; 130kg/m2 for wall thickness of 15cm. Lightweight structures can avoid severe damage during the earthquake, so that the buildings become more earthquake-resistant. Buildings that use this material are also more resistant to fire, moisture, and can be rapidly installed.

  • All windows and doors are equipped with two covers. The first cover are wooden doors and windows, while the second cover is the mosquito net.
  • All windows and doors can be opened and flow air into the house, but the mosquitoes/insects can not enter. The process of cooling room is maximized.
  • Almost all building elements, ranging from floors, walls, roofs, ceilings, pergola, to septic tanks, using EPS-lined concrete as the main material.
  • The building becomes cooler because polystyrene reduce heat up to 93%.

Preparation and EPS Panels Application
There are several companies that produce this type of polystyrene. The price varies, depending on thickness, and relatively more expensive than the brick with a mixture of cement and sand. The price is 10% -15% more expensive compared to bricks, but the benefits are numerous.

How are its preparation and application to build a house? The steps are :

  1. Architect submits the design drawings to the factory. For example, the wall, floor, and roof drawings.
  2. The factory produces or forms polystyrene materials according to design drawings.
  3. Materials that have been prepared are delivered to the site.
  1. Materials are developed and applied in accordance with the design. Each piece of material is coded for ease of placement during setup.
  2. Polystyrene materials are prepared with wiremesh as a reinforcement, and then filled with cement and plastered by spraying with concrete to cover the wiremesh.
  3. After the plaster dries, the second plastering is done again, until the desired thickness is achieved.
  4. The final step is the process of refining the materials (finishing).
Note : Make sure the design is appropriate when it is given to factory. It would be very inconvenient if the design changes after the materials are produced completely.
