On February 16, 2010, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra conducted a full-scale earthquake test on a b-panel® building. This test was the culmination of months and months of planning done by both University of Ahmad Jani (UNJANI) and Bandung Polytechnic academics, quake experts at the testing facility, as well as PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra’s own R&D team. Beforehand, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra has already conducted an earthquake simulation test using a 2-dimensional wall as a test subject. The test result of the 2-dimensional wall illustrated b-panel®‘s significantly higher lateral and axial strength when compared to conventional brick and lightweight concrete construction. However, motivated by the desire to prove the real-world earthquake performance of b-panel®, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra decided to invest in a full-scale quake testing. The testing object is a 2 story building, in actual scale, over 6 meter high, with full b-panel® construction comprising all wall, floor, and roof structure, without any additional reinforcing beams and columns. This test was also conducted to validate all the previous theoretical assessment of EPS panel system in its superiority to withstand earthquake, such as one prominent analysis by a University of Indonesia expert which was featured in the front page column of Kompas, a national newspaper one week after the Padang quake.

During the test day, PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra invited several overseas quake experts and construction professionals to witness the test and to help analyze the results. Present during the test day were Mr. Robert Cochrane, CEO of University of Newcastle, Australia – Singapore Campus, Mr. Peter Schmalfuss from Jerman, Managing Director Concrete Engineering Pte. Ltd, and Dr. Didier Petaluma from France, a mechanical engineering Lecturer at the University of Newcastle Singapore Campus. Also invited many of their b-panel® partner-installers across the country, to help strengthen their conviction of b-panel®‘s superior earthquake property and help spread the good news.

For this seismic testing, the b-panel® structure was equipped with numerous sensitive instruments from the National Building Testing Center, including more than 60 strain gauges located around the building to monitor the strain level of the structures at various points, and several proximity transducers at corners of test building to accurately monitor the deformation of the structure in real-time . To simulate the forces of a maximum (Zone 6) earthquake, two large capacity hydraulic jacks capable of exerting in excess of 100 tonnes were mounted at the top of the second story structure .

For the target Zone 6 (Most severe earthquake event classification in Indonesia), the team of PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra together with the academics from Ahmad Jani set the target threshold force from the Hydraulic Jack of -6.5 tonnes for SRPMK (Purpose designed quake structure) and approximately 18 tonnes for SRPMB (General purpose structure) These target threshold were calculated based on the structure quake coefficient, and the mass of the system, which was helped by the significant reduction of building mass thanks to the low-specific mass of b-panel® system .

Confirming the carefully done theoretical calculations, the b-panel® structure withstood the quake simulation until 18 tons of hydraulic jack pressure was reached, without any significant structural damage, and only when the force exceeded 25 tonnes that cracks started to become observable around the lower half of the structure, and finally after the force exceeded 40 tonnes, more than 2 times of target threshold test structure suffered failure at the connection to the foundation. Even at that point, the b-panel® structure itself was largely intact, without major damage to the wall or floor structure. This outcome illustrated how superior b-panel® system is when used to construct a structure in an earthquake prone area, and that the foundation, and the connection between the foundation and the building, had to be reinforced to match the strength of b-panel® system. From the point of view of structure ductility, unfortunately due to the foundation connection failure before a sufficient building deformation is achieved, the ductility performance of the building could not be optimally determined. However, one clear verdict emerged from the test, that with the b-panel® structure installed according to regular installation procedure, without any additional reinforcing columns or beams, its earthquake resistance in term of sheer strength, has been validated from this test.

PT. Beton Elemenindo Putra will continue to investigate and improve the seismic performance of b-panel® system to cater to the majority of Indonesian construction market which mostly lie on earthquake prone areas. Moreover, no falling debris was observed as b-panel® has no loose components in its structure. Falling chunks of bricks is usually the cause of human casualties during a major earthquake. The goal of b-panel® in this context are clear: to reduce the damage and financial loss, and more importantly, to ensure safety and reduce casualties when the next big quake hits again.
